Two-hour delays and ten-mile queues as M6 closed for serious …

Drivers are facing delays of two hours and ten miles of congestion after a serious incident closed a section of the M6. The southbound carriageway between junctions 4A, for the M42, and two, for the M69, was shut at around 5am by Warwickshire Police.

The nature of the incident was not known but there were severe delays. Congestion was also stretching back to junction seven of the M6, at Great Barr, the M42 before junction nine, routes through Meriden and the A5 past Nuneaton.

Drivers trapped in the gridlock were being turned around. They were being diverted via the M42 at junction ninea on to the A45 Birmingham Road and the A46 Coventry Eastern Bypass.

National Highways said: “Due to the nature of this incident, the road is expected to be closed throughout the morning. If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time as there is over ten miles of congestion on approach to the closure at J4a, resulting in a 120 minute delay.

“Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey. Warwickshire Police are leading the incident. National Highways Traffic Officers are providing support with traffic management.”

Diverted traffic is advised to follow the hollow diamond diversion symbol between J4a – J4

  • Leave the M6 at J4a and join the M42 headed northbound towards J9
  • Exit the M42 at J9 and take the 6th exit to re-join the M42 headed southbound
  • Continue along the M42 southbound, leaving at J6. Take the first exit onto the A45 headed eastbound.
  • Pick up the hollow square diversion symbol between J4 – J2
  • Continue on the A45 eastbound to its junction with the A46 Tollbar End.
  • Take the exit onto the A46 northbound and continue to re-join the M6 at J2.
