M62 to remain shut for hours with huge delays after tragic death of man
A stretch of the M62[1] remains fully shut this afternoon hours after a man tragically died.
The man - a pedestrian - was struck by a car on the motorway[2] between junction 11 and 12 at around 12.15am today (Tuesday), Greater Manchester Police said. He was sadly pronounced dead on the scene.
A 25-year-old man, who remained on the scene, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and taken into custody. Both sides of the motorway have been closed off since the early hours of this morning.
According to local bus company Go North West, the closure will be in place until at least 2pm. Severe delays remain up to the closure, while the surrounding roads near the closure in Eccles, Cadishead, Irlam and Wigan are extremely congested.
There have been severe delays on the East Lancashire Road throughout the morning and through Leigh. A number of bus services have also been affected by the motorway closure due to congestion on local routes.
Diversion routes are in place on both carriageways. A statement posted on the National Highways website said: "North West Motorway Police currently lead the response to a serious collision which was first reported to National Highways at 00:15. Due to the nature of this incident, the carriageway has been closed in both directions.
"National Highways have resources in attendance to assist with traffic management and traffic caught within the closure has since been released from the rear of the queue. The road is expected to remain closed into the early afternoon."
In their latest tweet posted at 11.37am, the North West Motorway Police said: "M62 junction 12 to 11 still remains closed in both directions at the moment. As soon as we have an update as to when the carriageway is going to be reopen, we will let you know."
