M61: Emergency services called to ‘rescue incident’

The M61 southbound was closed between junction 5 and 4 at just after 9pm on the evening of Thursday September 26 as emergency services arrived on the scene.

They were called to assist someone in need of “rescue” on St Helens Road.

A Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “At just before 9pm this evening, Tuesday, September 26, fire crews were called to support GMP with a rescue of person incident on St Helens Road, Bolton.

“Fire engines from Bolton Station were quickly mobilised to the scene.

“Firefighters were in attendance for approximately one and a half hours.”

According to North West Motorway Police the incident resulted in the closure of two lanes from Junction 5 A58 Snydale Way, Westhoughton to Junction 4 A6 Watergate Lane, Farnworth[1]

Motorway[2] users were warned to expect delays of around 20 minutes and were diverted as the police officers and firefighters went about their work.

An eyewitness reported seeing them on site.

He said: “We have four police vehicles, two fire engines and a specialist fire engine appears to be on sight as well.”

By just before 10.40pm that same evening, the eyewitness said the incident “looked to have concluded successfully” and noted police appearing to take down their cordon.

Traffic was then flowing freely again by 10.40pm.
