Woman rushed to hospital after M4 crash leads to car bursting into flames

A woman is in hospital after being involved in a crash on the M4 which led to a car flipping and bursting into flames. Two vehicles collided on the motorway near junction 17 on the Somerset-Wiltshire border at around 10pm yesterday (August 20).

Multiple 999 crews – including an air ambulance – dashed out to the scene with the M4 being closed on the London-bound side between junctions 18 and 17. National Highways also said traffic heading the opposite way was also held at one point.

A woman was taken to the Great Western Hospital in Swindon. According to Highways, the air ambulance left the scene shortly before 11.30pm.

The motorway reopened just after 12am in the early hours of Monday morning (August 21). Highways said: “The vehicles involved in the earlier collision on the #M4[2] eastbound between J18 (#Bath[3]) – J17 (#Chippenham[4]) have now been cleared to the hard shoulder. All emergency have resumed and the road has been reopened.”

Photos taken show queuing traffic on the motorway westbound as traffic is held, with a burning vehicle on the eastbound carriage. Wiltshire Police said: “Shortly after 10pm last night, emergency services attended a two vehicle collision on the eastbound carriageway of the M4 near Leigh Delamere services.

“A full closure of the M4 was put in place between junctions 17 and 18 and a woman was taken to GWH. The road reopened at 12.45am.”
