Woman dies after being hit by tanker on M6 motorway
A 54-year-old woman has died after being hit by a tanker on the M6 motorway near Wigan.
Emergency services attended the fatal crash on the northbound carriageway between J26 M58 (Orrell Interchange) to J27 (Standish) at around 9.15am on Sunday.
A full closure was put in place as Merseyside Police and Highways traffic officers worked at the scene and investigation work was carried out. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene and her next of kin have been informed.

The LGV driver stopped at the scene and is helping police with their enquiries, with the crash now being investigated by the Serious Collision Investigations Unit (SCIU).
The motorway was shut shortly after 9.15am and remained closed throughout the day until around 9pm. Diversions were put in place as drivers became stuck within the closure for a number of hours.
Chief Inspector Simon Owen said: “We can confirm that sadly a woman has died following a collision on the M6 this morning, and our thoughts and condolences are very much with the family. Her next of kin has been informed and is being supported by specialist Family Liaison Officers.
“An investigation into the collision has been launched and would urge anyone who witnessed the incident or has dashcam footage to please contact us. Any footage, or information, could be vital in establishing what happened.”
