‘Serious’ M5 crash: several people fighting for their lives

A black Nissan Qashqai crashed into the rear of a white Mercedes campervan that was stationary on the hard shoulder just after the junction eight slip road where the M50 through Herefordshire joins the M5.

Several people were hurt, and an air ambulance was called to the scene along with police at 5.30pm on Friday (August 18).

The driver of the Nissan and the front passenger were treated for minor injuries, but the rear passengers suffered life-threatening injuries.

All passengers of the Nissan were taken to Worcestershire Royal Hospital.

The occupants of the Mercedes van were treated at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital, and the passenger has since been discharged with injuries to her back.

The northbound motorway was closed for several hours, with several miles of queueing traffic backing up.

National Highways said traffic was diverted from the area using the exit and entry slip roads.

The road was reopened in the early hours of the morning following police investigations.

No arrests have been made.

Police are now appealing for witnesses who may have seen the crash take place.

A spokesperson for West Mercia Police said: “Anyone with information about this collision is asked to call PC Rob Taylor on 101 ext 773 3408 or email him at [email protected][1] or his team at [email protected][2].”
