Mum’s agonising tribute as police release first image of ‘happy, beautiful’ son killed crossing M62

The mum of a 12-year-old Leeds boy who was killed in a hit-and-run while crossing the M62 motorway has paid tribute to her 'beautiful, happy' son.
Callum Rycroft, from Harehills in Leeds, was crossing the M62 motorway moments after a young boy had been seen walking up the motorway with an older man following a one-car crash further down the road.
While attempting to cross, Callum was hit by a car but the driver fled the scene, police said.
West Yorkshire Police have now released an image of Callum along with a tribute from his devastated mum.
In a statement, Callum’s mother paid a tribute to her son.
She said: “Callum was a beautiful happy soul who was unique, great fun and larger than life. He brought light, laughter and noise into any room.
“Callum had a massive impact on everyone who met him. The house is so quiet without him here.
“We are devastated at what has happened and request that people respect our wish for privacy at this difficult time. We are very grateful for the support and kind comments we have received.”
A man is due to appear at Magistrates Court on Tuesday after being charged relating to the incident on the M62.
Matthew Rycroft, 36, of Nowell View, Leeds will appear before Leeds Magistrates Court charged with causing/allowing the death of a child in an incident on Saturday, 5 August.
He was also charged with failing to provide a specimen.
Police can also now formally name the victim of the collision as 12-year-old Callum Rycroft from Leeds.
