Massive fire at industrial estate seen for miles around
A joint investigation is to be launched into the cause of a huge fire at a city industrial estate. South Wales Fire and Rescue Service (SWRS) said crews spent more than four hours bringing the blaze under control after being called to Leeway Industrial Estate in Newport at around 7.45pm on Monday (August 14).
Sixteen fire engines were sent to the scene as well as support from the Welsh Ambulance Trust, Gwent Police, local businesses and Wales and West Utilities.
An eyewitness described the fire as "significant" and said he could see "thick black smoke billowing into the air". He said Gwent Police officers were turning traffic away from the site near Nash Road as emergency services tackled the fire.
SWRS group manager Mike Evans said: "The initial crews were faced with a significant fire. Crews did a tremendous job in preventing the fire spread and contained the fire by midnight." He added: "A joint investigation will begin with South Wales Fire and Rescue Service and Gwent Police into the cause of the fire."
