M60: Man detained after walking on hard shoulder on motorway

Police and National Highways were called to the motorway near junctions 16 for Clifton and 17 for the Whitefield Interchange after a man was seen attempting to cross the carriageway here.

He was detained by police as the traffic was brought to a standstill, but no injuries were reported.

A police spokesman said: “At around 9.30am this morning (Friday), officers were called to reports of a male pedestrian walking along the hard-shoulder of the M60 motorway near to junctions 16 and 17 in Bury.

“Officers were deployed and the male was detained. No injuries were reported.”

Traffic was slow until around 11am due to the incident.

National Highways North West[1] spokesperson said: “Police and National Highways are currently dealing with a pedestrian that had crossed the carriageway on M60 junction 17 to 16.

“The pedestrian has been detained on the hard shoulder. Carriageway has now been reopened but speed restrictions are still in place.”

Shortly afterwards, a car broke down on the exit slip road of junction 17 and traffic was delayed again.
