M6 closed after suspected World War 2 shell found nearby

The discovery of a suspected WW2 grenade caused chaos on the M6[1] today. West Midlands Police[2] and Warwickshire[3] Police have been involved in the incident on a residential road close to junction 5 of the M6 this afternoon (August 15).

The motorway is now reopen but residual delays remain. The M6 was closed in both directions between Junctions 4 and 6 with drivers urged to avoid the area. Queues were reported as far back as Corley Services.

In a statement, West Midlands Police confirmed that that initial calls reported a suspected WWII shell and the bomb squad were called in.

However, it was then discovered that it was not a grenade. "We were called after a suspected WW2 shell was found in Chillinghome Road, Hodge Hill," a West Midlands Police spokesman said.

"The EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) attended and following an assessment it was established it wasn't a grenade."

West Midlands Ambulance Service were made aware of the police incident but did not attend. You can follow the latest on this incident in our live blog here[4].
