M5 car fire in Somerset leaves vehicle destroyed
An intense fire on the M5 in Somerset this morning caused traffic to be halted following a significant emergency response[1]. Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service were called to the blaze at 8.19am this morning (August 4).
The vehicle was well alight and completely destroyed by fire. The M5 had to be closed for around 15 minutes[2] while it was recovered, causing significant tailbacks and residual delays.
The incident happened on the northbound carriageway between junctions 26 for Wellington and 25 for Taunton. There were also delays on the southbound carriageway as drivers slowed down to look at the blaze.
Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service have issued a statement which reads: “Fire Control received calls to reports of a fire on the M5 Northbound carriageway between junctions 26 and 25. Two fire engines from Wellington were mobilised to the incident.
“On arrival, crews confirmed this to be a vehicle on the hard shoulder, well alight. Crews extinguished the fire using two breathing apparatus wearers and one hose reel jet. The vehicle was completely destroyed by fire.”
