M1 oil tanker fire live updates as lanes remain closed southbound between junction 28 and junction 29

Two lanes remain closed on the southbound carriageway of the M1 after a serious oil tanker fire closed the motorway in both directions. The fire shut the motorway[1], between junction 29 for the A617 (Mansfield / Chesterfield) and junction 28 for the A38 (Mansfield / Alfreton), at around 11am on Tuesday (August 22).

Firefighters remained at the scene on Tuesday evening, as the tanker was emptied and recovered[2], and the northbound carriageway was reopened.

But as of around 6am on Wednesday (August 23), two lanes remain closed on the southbound carriageway, with emergency resurfacing work taking place. A spokesman for the East Midlands division of National Highways added: "Restrictions are expected to remain in place until mid morning, thank you for your patience."

On Tuesday evening, firefighters worked to bring the contents of the tanker to a safe temperature to allow the safe removal and transfer of the contents to another tanker for removal from the site.

Crews from Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and South Yorkshire, with the use of two water carriers and a foam unit, worked in a cross-county operation to tackle the fire[4]. Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service officials said no-one had been injured in the fire, with the driver managing to safely exit the vehicle by the time firefighters arrived just after 10.35am on Tuesday.
