John MaWasteSki among names of Reading bin lorries after public …
The names of five new Reading bin lorries have been revealed after a public survey. In June, Reading Borough Council[1] asked borough residents and primary school children to name five electric bin lorries that have joined the fleet.
The first two trucks, named by local schoolchildren, are called Boom Boom, suggested by Hannah Niazi from Alfred Sutton Primary School; and Dusty Binfield[2], suggested by Antoine Ifill of The Lodge Day Nursery. The other three will now be called Bincent Van Gone, suggested by Edward Day; John MaWasteSki, suggested by Emlyn Jones; and Bin There, Done That, suggested by Erin Gray.
This latest competition follows a similar contest which sought public help to name five of the council’s food waste trucks in 2022. The likes of Ricky Gerwaste; Waster Taster; the Bindalorian, Hungry Hippo; Trashosaurus and Bin Truck McBinFace now collect food waste across Reading Borough.
The council introduced its first electric bin lorry in 2021 with four others since joining the fleet. It is part of the council’s continued pledge to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2030.
Cllr Karen Rowland, Lead Member for Environmental Services and Community Safety, said: “I’m thrilled that residents were so excited about naming our electric waste trucks and are engaging and getting behind our goal to protect the environment. The switch over to electric vehicles is a key part of our carbon-zero ambitions, and we continue to lead by example in moving towards that target.
“Reading[4] Borough Council was the first local authority in Berkshire[5] to introduce an electric bin lorry and we’ve now expanded that to five. Tackling the climate emergency is a team effort, and in addition to these electric waste trucks, I encourage all residents to play their part too by recycling more as well as engaging with food waste recycling”.
