Ford Fiesta ‘boxed in’ by police near M6 after ‘package thrown over prison wall’

A suspected stolen Ford Fiesta was "boxed in" by police squad cars and a force helicopter just off the M6 after a package was "thrown over a prison wall." Sharing details of the frantic cross-border incident, which took place on August 15, Warwickshire Police[1] said they received a call about a cloned Ford Fiesta travelling northbound on the M1 towards the M6.

The force said the vehicle departed a local prison after "a package of drugs" was allegedly thrown over a prison wall. Traffic officers leapt into action and intercepted the Fiesta understood to be stolen from Birmingham,[2] at junction 5 of the M6, which serves the Castle Bromwich[3] interchange.

The Operational Patrol Unit for Warwickshire Police (Warwickshire OPU) shared details of the incident on their social channels on August 23 along with a picture of police vehicles surrounding a Ford Fiesta. Police confirmed that two people were arrested.

A Warwickshire OPU spokesperson said: "On Tuesday 15th August 23 our colleagues from the Northants Road Policing Team and the Central Motorway Police Group contacted us about this cloned Ford Fiesta travelling northbound on the M1 towards the M6.

"The vehicle had visited a prison in the Northants area and the occupants had thrown a package of drugs over the prison wall before making off. We attended the M6 and Intercepted the Fiesta heading northbound. The vehicle exited at junction 5 of the M6 and with the Police helicopter from NPAS above we carried out a pre-emptive box on the slip road.

"The passenger de camped and attempted to run off but was quickly captured and arrested. The driver was also arrested. Checks on the vehicle confirmed it was a stolen vehicle, stolen from Birmingham.

"Both occupants were handed over to Northants Police Road Policing Team. The vehicle was recovered. The drugs thrown over the prison wall were also recovered by prison staff and handed over to the police."
