Cuts could leave one Police Scotland car to cover motorways at night

Police Scotland has said that “hard choices lie ahead” for its budget after it was claimed the force was proposing to cut 42 traffic constables, leaving a single car to patrol the entire road network at night.

Currently Glasgow has between one and two vehicles, each with two officers, patrolling roads overnight, while other cities are patrolled by local police.

The proposals would cut the patrols in other cities, leaving only the Glasgow force to attend motorway calls between 3am and 7am across Scotland’s central belt, one officer said.

Sharon Dowey, the Scottish Conservatives’ deputy justice spokeswoman, said the proposal “would be laughable were it not so serious”.
