Scores of residents were evacuated after a ‘hazardous materials incident’ at Birmingham flats on a main road. Emergency services had dashed to a suspected gas leak in Sheldon yesterday.

Up to 20 firefighters responded and attended Solihull[1] Heights, on the A45 Coventry Road, at 3.30 pm yesterday, Sunday, August 20. West Midlands Fire Service said firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the building before residents were told to leave.

The fire service said the incident “involved an unknown gas leak in a flat within the building.” Several residents were checked over by paramedics, while police cordoned off the scene.

In a statement, the fire service said: “At approximately 15:30 on Sunday, August 20, we responded to an incident at Solihull Heights, New Coventry Road. Firefighters from Sheldon, Solihull, Ward End and Billesely fire stations attended.

“This incident involved an unknown gas leak in a flat within the residential building. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered and made initial investigations before evacuating residents.

“We are working closely with Police and Ambulance colleagues. Several residents have received precautionary checks and been discharged on scene. Crews and specialist hazardous materials advisors will continue to monitor the incident, work to determine a cause, and formulate a plan for residents of the building.” Crews have since left the scene.
