Watch: Motorcyclist pulls wheelies in dramatic high-speed police chase
A motorcyclist has been caught on camera doing wheelies down a motorway before vaulting a fence on foot in an attempt to evade police.
Joe Onley, 23, was spotted by a passing police aircraft speeding towards Ollerton from the Hucknall area of Nottinghamshire in April last year, as he performed wheelies and recklessly overtook other vehicles.
The rider was chased by police and arrested
Police pursuit drivers struggled to keep up with him , though Onley was initially unaware that he was being tailed. When he did spot a police car, the police said he immediately turned and sped away.
Nottinghamshire Police released footage of the moment its officers caught the speeding motorcyclist.
The rider fell from his motorbike and ran off
The video from shows Onley fleeing on foot, after mounting a pavement and falling from his bike, darting through gardens and jumping fences in Kelham village, before being detained by officers in the grounds of a farm.
Police working on the ground were guided to his exact location by the National Police Air Service. Onley, of Nottingham Road, Hucknall, later admitted to dangerous driving, driving without insurance, and fraudulently using a registration mark.
The motorcyclist fled and jumped over fences
Appearing at Nottingham Crown Court on Tuesday, he was handed a nine-month prison sentence, suspended for two years. He was also ordered to pay £350 in costs, undertake 180 hours of unpaid work, and he was disqualified from driving for two years.
PC Sarah Clifton, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “This was an appalling display of riding that could easily have ended in tragedy.
“Onley not only put himself in danger on that day, but also every other road user. His behaviour was utterly inexcusable and I am pleased he has now been held to account.”
