Two-car crash and oil spill sparks A66 traffic chaos
A two-car crash and oil spill on the A66 sparked traffic chaos on Tuesday evening.
Emergency services were called to the major route after the crash between the Yarm[1] Road and Elton[2] turn-off. This sparked a full closure of the westbound route – with traffic queuing for four miles and motorists gridlocked in some areas.
Yarm Road and Preston Farm Industrial Estate became one of the worst areas for traffic[3], according to AA Traffic News, with delays stretching all the way down Yarm Road towards Yarm High Street. The North East Ambulance Service confirmed that no patients required treatment at the scene.
National Highways said it expected the incident to clear between 10pm and 10.15pm on Tuesday evening.
A Cleveland Fire Brigade[5] spokesperson said: “The time of call was 4.47pm and it was to a two-car road traffic collision on the A66[6]. Ambulance and police also attended the scene. We made the vehicle and area safe. There was a spillage of oil on the road. We came away at 6pm.”
A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We received a call to 999 at 16:47 to a two-vehicle road traffic collision on the A66 near Stockton[7] tonight. We sent a rapid response paramedic and a double crewed emergency ambulance. No patients required treatment and we stood down on scene.”
A Cleveland Police[8] spokesperson said at the time: “Cleveland Police are advising motorists to avoid the A66 westbound, from the junction of Yarm Road as the road is closed. Please use alternative routes. Thank you for your patience.”
