Suspected stolen Land Rover involved in two-car smash on A66

A suspected stolen Land Rover was involved in a two-vehicle crash in Middlesbrough[1] that closed the A66[2].

Police and fire crews were called to the eastbound carriageway of the major Teesside route, at the Cargo Fleet Lane roundabout[3], after two cars collided on Sunday evening. Images from the scene show a police car in the centre of the roundabout blocking traffic and another shows fire crews at the scene.

Cleveland Police[4] has confirmed that enquiries are ongoing into the occupants of the reported stolen Land Rover after they made off from the scene following the incident. The vehicles were recovered – with the fire service saying that the five casualties involved had minor injuries.

The road was closed for around an hour and a half after the incident while emergency services dealt with the aftermath. A Cleveland Fire Brigade[6] spokesperson said: “We were called to a road traffic collision on July 2 at 7.24pm on A66 Eastbound, Cargo Fleet Lane, North Ormesby[7].

“Three engines from Grangetown[8] and Redcar[9] in attendance. It was a two-vehicle road traffic collision involving five casualties with minor injuries who were all treated at the scene. Crews made the scene safe and left by 9.03pm.”

A force spokesperson said: “The A66 eastbound carriageway was closed around 7:25pm on Sunday, July 2, whilst officers dealt with a collision close to McDonald’s. No one was injured and the vehicles involved were recovered. The road was reopened by 9:05pm.

“Enquiries are ongoing into the occupants of a Land Rover involved – after it was reported stolen – and the occupants made off from the scene.”
