Shawlands cinema fire ‘ongoing’ as crews remain at scene of …

Fire crews remain at the scene of a blaze at a former cinema in Shawlands[1].

Emergency services were called to the derelict building on Kilmarnock Road, formerly home to the White Elephant cinema, around 7pm on Tuesday evening.

Over 40 firefighters[2] and nine appliances were sent to the scene with nearby businesses evacuated.

It’s understood that the fire was brought under control around 5.47am on Wednesday morning and crews still remain on the scene to make the area safe.

There are no reports of any casualties.

Kilmarnock Road was closed between Pollokshaws Road and Coustonholm Road with motorists urged to use an alternative route.

The extent of damage to the building is currently unknown with members of the public raising concerns that the incident could spell the end for the building that sits within the Shawlands Cross Conservation Area.
