Rail lines closed and trains cancelled after emergency services …

All train lines are closed between Bolton and Preston railway stations as emergency services deal with an incident. Northern said train services running through the stations would be cancelled or delayed by 60 minutes

All stations between Preston and Salford Crescent stations, reported the train operator, would not be served, with disruption expected until at least 5.30pm.

Emergency services are said to be ‘dealing with an incident’ in the Lostock area of Bolton this afternoon – Thursday. A number of trains have already been cancelled.

The nature of the emergency hasn’t yet been revealed. The Manchester Evening News has contacted British Transport Police for further comment.

Northern routes affected include services between Manchester Airport and Blackpool North and between Barrow-in-Furness and Windermere.

TransPennine Express trains between Manchester Airport and Carlisle, Glasgow Central and Edinburgh are also expected to be affected. National Rail said: “The emergency services are dealing with an incident between Bolton and Preston. To allow them to safely carry out their work, all lines are closed.


Lostock railway station

“As a result, trains running to and from these stations may be cancelled, delayed by up to 60 minutes or revised. This is expected until 530pm.

“All stations between Preston and Salford Crescent will not be served. You may use your ticket on Metrolink services to or from Manchester Airport, and Manchester city centre at no extra cost.

“Customers travelling to or from Manchester and Preston can board services to Wigan and change for onward connections to Preston.

“Replacement road transport has been requested. More details will be provided here once this is confirmed.”

Manchester Piccadilly railway station said in a tweet: “Due to the emergency services dealing with an incident at Lostock services via Bolton towards Preston and Blackpool are currently subject to delay and cancellation.

“Please check before you travel. We are sorry for the disruption caused.”
