M62, M1 and M18 delays, timings and closures today as police escort abnormal load

The M62 in South Yorkshire will be closed while an abnormal load is transported across the major motorway.

South Yorkshire Police[1] will be assiting in the transportation of the 90-meter-long, six-meter-wide and 500-tonne vehicle[2] today (July 15). The load will be leaving Sandy Lane, Worksop, at 7pm and travelling along Gateford Road onto the A57 before joining the M1. It will journey along the M1 onto the M18 before taking the M62[3] toward Goole.

The force has urged drivers to consider changing their route as long delays are to be expected. It has also asked spectators who gather to watch the heavy load to not block the cargo’s path.

This occurred a previous time with motorists leaving their vehicles to watch. Any vehicles left in the path of the heavy load will be removed. South Yorkshire Police thanked drivers for their understanding.

The route

From 7pm this evening, the route will involve these roads in the following order:

  • Sandy Lane, Worksop
  • Gateford Road
  • A57
  • M1
  • M18
  • M62 to Goole

South Yorkshire Police Statement

South Yorkshire Police[5] Operational Support issued the following statement on social media, it said: “On Saturday July 15 at around 7.00pm, we will be escorting a large abnormal load from Worksop to Goole.

“The load will be leaving Sandy Lane, Worksop and travelling to Gateford Road towards the A57, then onto the M1 – M18 – M62. The load is 90 metres long, six metres wide and 500 tonnes so will not be breaking any land speed records.

“If you are intending to use any of these roads on Saturday evening, please consider that there may be a delay, so you may want to travel earlier than initially intended.

“Once we reach the M62, the motorway will be closed to allow us to travel contraflow, so again delays will be expected. The last time we escorted this type of load we had plenty of spectators, which is not an issue, however some people unfortunately blocked our route by leaving their vehicles.

“If you do leave your vehicle and it is blocking our route, it will be removed. Thank you for your understanding.”
