M6 Cheshire traffic updates as ‘infrastructure defect’ causes delays

Motorists on the M6 face delays through Cheshire after an “infrastructure defect” caused the northbound carriageway to close. Two lanes have now reopened.

National Highways said it became aware of the defect in the night. It meant the stretch between Holmes Chapel and Knutsford has had to close.

The agency announced the closure at around 5.05am. A picture from the motorway cameras appears to show a highways vehicle working on an overhead sign.

A National Highways spokesman said: “The M6 is closed northbound between J18 (Holmes Chapel) and J19 (Knutsford) due to an infrastructure defect that was discovered during overnight planned works.

“Specialist engineers are working at the scene to investigate and assess the situation to reopen the road as soon as it is safe.”

This is an unfolding incident. We will have more as it becomes available.
