M6 lanes closed in Cheshire after ‘infrastructure defect’ found
The motorway was closed northbound this morning between junctions 19, for Knutsford, and 18, for Middlewich, after the defect was discovered overnight while roadworks were taking place.
There were long delays throughout the morning, but two lanes have since reopened with traffic easing.
The defect is believed to be a land subsidence in an embankment.
The engineer will attend and inspect the damage as crews work to fully reopen the carriageway.
A National Highways spokesman said: “Two lanes remain closed on the M6 northbound between junctions 18 and 19 due to an infrastructure defect that was discovered during planned overnight work.
“There are currently no delays to journey times.
“A specialist engineer will be carrying out an inspection, and we’ll provide further updates in due course.”
