Delays still remain on the M6 during Sunday evening as motorists endured a day of gridlock in and around Preston.

Two lanes remain closed southbound between Junction 32 (Broughton) and Junction 31 (Samlesbury) as of 7pm on Sunday (2 July).

The M6 northbound has one lane closed past the scene of the crash which saw a milk tanker cross the central reservation and shed its load[15] of 20,000 litres of milk across the carriageway – as well as a significant amount of diesel.

The M55 eastbound between Junction 3 (Kirkham) and the M6 at Broughton has also now re-opened.

There are significant delays on the M6 southbound still occurring and also on the M55 eastbound – with delays of up to an hour in some cases.

Congestion on Preston’s surrounding routes are now starting to ease.

A man and woman were taken to hospital after the crash shortly after 7am on Sunday.

Emergency services, including five crews from Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service, worked to make the scene safe.

Motorists reported how all surrounding and through routes in and around Preston became jammed[18] up with motorway traffic trying to find alternative routes.

Penwortham, Fulwood, Grimsargh, Ribbleton and the Docks were all seeing journeys taking two-hours against normal travel times with some motorists saying they experienced delays of more than four hours.

Lancashire Police began to open lanes of the motorway around 5pm after approaching 10-hours of clean-up operations.

Support on the clean-up also came from the Environment Agency who used equipment to collect the milk.

We‘ve been at #M6 #Lancs following an accident which caused an overturned milk tanker. We used booms 2 capture milk spillage 2 prevent pollution into the local watercourse.
