M5 live updates: Traffic ‘not moving’ in parts of Somerset

Sections of the M5 are ‘not moving’ amid the volume of holiday traffic heading to the Westcountry.

There are long delays on stretches of the M5 in Somerset this afternoon, with stop-start traffic from Bristol to Wellington.

National Highways has warned on traffic maps that some sections are ‘not moving’ amid severe congestion near Taunton and near junction 19, just south of Bristol/

The southbound stretch of the motorway, especially between Bristol and Bridgwater, is seen as one of the most important holiday routes in the country and often faces delays at this time of the year.

Inrix states: “Heavy traffic due to holiday traffic on M5 Northbound between J26 A38 (Wellington) and J21 A370 (Weston-super-mare). Traffic in patches.”

There were long delays last Friday (July 21) as thousands of holidaymakers hit the roads as schools broke up for the summer. There was plenty of M5 disruption with a multi-vehicle crash and wet weather leading to lane closures.
