‘Heartbreak’ as man dies on M56 after car leaves motorway

People are "heartbroken" after a man died on the M56 after his car left the carriageway.

Police received a number of 999 calls at around 12.10pm on Sunday, July 30, reporting a car had left the M56 carriageway near to junction 14 at Helsby. Police[1] attended the scene and found a black Toyota Yaris had come off the motorway and gone down the embankment.

The driver of the Yaris, a 70-year-old man from Denton, was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed.

Police are now appealing for witnesses and video footage following the crash.

Sergeant Simon Degg, of the Serious and Complex Collision Investigation unit at Cheshire Police, said: "This investigation is ongoing and we committed to doing all we can to establish exactly what has taken place. As part of our investigation, we’re keen to hear from anyone who witnessed the collision or anyone with any dashcam footage of the incident.

“I’d ask anyone with any information to contact us on 101, or visit www.cheshire.police.uk/tell-uk , quoting IML 1608887.”

People paid tribute to the man on social media following the news of his death.

Royle Gaz JO said: "So sad... Thoughts with the family at this heartbreaking time."

Andrea Kirkpatrick said: "Such sad news. Thoughts & prayers, for the family… xx"

Louise Shine said: "Thoughts to his family. We were held up in the tailbacks. So sad x"

Sue Howard said: "So sad. Condolences to his family and friends at this sad time. RIP Sir."
