Traffic stopped in both directions due to crash on motorway

Traffic on both the north and southbound carriageways of a motorway has been stopped due to a crash.

The incident happened between junction two and junction one of the M66 earlier this morning and has forced traffic officers to stop motorists travelling in both directions.

There is currently queueing traffic and congestion building between the A58 Rochdale Road and the A56 for Ramsbottom.

The AA travel website states: "All lanes stopped, police incident, congestion, queueing traffic.

"All lanes stopped and queueing traffic due to police incident on M66 both ways between J2 A58 Rochdale Road (Bury) and J1 A56 Walmersley Road (Ramsbottom).

"Congestion to J3 (Pilsworth Road) Northbound."

It is believed the incident was first reported around 8.20am.
