A 15-year-old girl has been charged with animal cruelty after being filmed allegedly throwing a cat out the window of a moving car and off a bridge.

The Queensland[2] teen was filmed riding in the front passenger seat of a car travelling down the Pacific Motorway in Beenleigh, south Brisbane[3], at about 3am on Saturday.

The social media footage, which 7NEWS[4] obtained, shows the cat sitting on the teenage girl's lap before she picks it up and throws it out of the car's window.

The shocking clip shows the cat going over the highway's concrete guardrail and onto the busy road below.

The girl was arrested at a Gold Coast address on Monday following a police investigation.

Police charged the 15-year-old with endangering the safe use of a vehicle by throwing an object and animal cruelty.

She will face Southport Children's Court at a later date.

Animal welfare organisation RACQ Queensland condemned the girl's alleged actions.

'We condemn this blatant animal cruelty,' RACQ said in a statement.

'They clearly have no empathy and a total disregard for life. It's an absolutely vile act.

'We also don't know the outcome and suffering the cat endured from this situation which is awful.'
