M1 updates as traffic queueing near junction 21 due to multiple vehicle collision

Traffic was queuing on the M1[1] following a multiple vehicle collision. Delays of 45 minutes[2] were expected for drivers on the M1 after an accident at around 4pm on the southbound side of the motorway[3] close to Junction 21.

Lane one reopened but lanes two and three remain closed whilst recovery and clean up work took place. All lanes have since reopened.

National Highways officers attended the scene. According to traffic monitoring site Inrix at the time: "Three lanes closed and queueing traffic due to accident, four cars involved on M1 Southbound from J29A A6192 Erin Road (Markham Vale / Bolsover) to J29 A617 (Chesterfield / Mansfield).

"The road has been reopened after being temporarily closed earlier although lanes two, three and four (of four) remain closed." Follow our live blog below for updates.
