Anger as Nuneaton to Leamington rail services cancelled for the …
Passengers were left fuming after trains between Nuneaton and Leamington were cancelled for the 17th time in 20 working days. The latest happened yesterday afternoon (Wednesday, June 28) and left local rail users livid.
They took to social media to complain to West Midlands Railway. One angry user dubbed the rail firm ‘incompetent’, and said: “It’s seriously beyond a joke now.’
CoventryLive contacted the rail company about the spate of cancellations and a spokesman apologised. They explained that there have been a number of reasons behind the spate of cancellations, with yesterday’s being a train fault.
But the service has been hit by other ‘incidents’. The spokesman added that compensation is available.
“We are sorry to passengers who have experienced an increase in disrupted journeys between Leamington Spa[1] and Nuneaton[2] recently,” the spokesman said. “The disruption can be attributed to a combination of heavy rainfall, operational incidents and some issues related to the introduction of a new train fleet on the line.
“We are working hard to improve performance on the route. Any passengers whose journeys have been delayed by 15 minutes or more as a result of disruption should claim compensation via the Delay Repay scheme.”
The Nuneaton to Leamington service, which calls in at Bedworth, Bermuda and Coventry stations, has been at the centre of controversy in the past. Post pandemic, West Midlands Railway took the decision to stop the hourly rail service between the two towns, via Coventry.[3][4][5]
Then, several months later, the rail service stopped altogether, with buses replacing the train service. In December 2022, the hourly service was reinstated.[6]
