A Bigg Night Out in Newcastle in 2003 – 10 photos of lads and lasses on the Toon

These partygoers were enjoying a night out in Newcastle 20 years ago – and subsequently photographed for our weekly ‘Bigg Night Out’ feature

The weekend is practically upon us once again, and it’s time from our weekly heap of retro fun in the Bigg Night Out segment.

The feature was once a staple in the printed edition of the Chronicle[1] every Friday between 1999 and 2012, featuring fun photographs of people living it up like weekend millionaires in Newcastle City Centre.

The party people in today’s ten snaps were photographed on the tiles of the Toon back in 2003 – 20 years ago! And while we hope the last two decades have been good to every single one of them, we want to know what you remember of the big year?

It was the year in which at the time record high UK temperatures of 38.5°C were recorded at Brogdale, near Faversham in Kent, supersonic aircraft Concorde made its final commercial flights after twenty-seven years, and the M6 Toll motorway opened.

In sport meanwhile, arguably the greatest footballer of all time in Cristiano Ronaldo made his debut for Manchester United at the age of 18 against Bolton Wanderers. Meanwhile, outsider Ben Curtis would win the British Open, beating Thomas Björn and Vijay Singh by a single shot at Royal St. George’s.

Blockbusters which debuted included Pirates of the Caribbean, 2 Fast 2 Furious, Love Actually, Kill Bill: Volume 1 and Bruce Almighty, while in TV, Glasgow’s Michelle McManus would win Pop Idol and Cameron Stout bested Big Brother.

Number one tracks at the time included the ‘Sound of the Underground’ by Girls Aloud, ‘All the Things She Said’ by TaTu, ‘You Said No’ by Busted and Evanescene’s ‘Bring Me to Life’ – all absolute bangers.

Have a look through our 10 Bigg Night Out pictures from 2003, and see if you recognise anyone.
