I would highly recommend this for anyone with a soft top car. uUe as per instructions and you can’t go far wrong. as it’s says spray on aggitate with provided sponge, re-apply if necessary and rinse. I usually don’t wait for this stage to fully dry before applying proofer. I have used this on my sabbs for over 4 years. One set lasts for two applications so I go through one a year. At the price it is on Amazon it’s a bargain. I pay 30% more locally and I have to drive to get it.
Once applied the water just beads off, unless it’s a monsoon in which case the roof gets wet, but no water penitrates into the vehicle.
I tend not to wash the roof between treatments just wipe it over with a micro fibre cloth when washing the rest of the car. This brings it up a treat.
Treat ment time is about 45 minutes depending on if you have someone elses cat sleeping on your roof as I have. In which case allow additional 40 min just to vaccuum the roof. That is the trick I always vaccuum the roof first with upholstery attachment/brush. This allows the cleaner to its job on the fabric without working in unnecessary dust etc.
First of all let me mention that this product was tested on a knackered soft top which wasn’t looked after by the previous owner and was stricken with mould. I wasn’t expecting it to come up like new but after just one wash (having scrubbed the product in well) and rinse it already looked a thousand times better. Its clear that had this procedure been done more regularly than once every ten years or more it would look fantastic all the time!
So as for the cleaner be aware that if the top is in poor condition you will have to do several washes with this stuff the first time. Otherwise its a great product and does what it’s supposed to! the colour of the top was also worth noting as it really showed through after cleaning the layer of grime away which had discoloured the top.
The protector is of course the second product in this pack and all I can say is wow! what a difference it makes. As soon as water hits the top (after just one application left to cure overnight) it beads up instantly and rolls off with almost no absorption save for the heaviest of rain. Just like their fantastic HD wax which I now swear by having tried loads, I would swear by this as my protection of choice for fabric tops.
Another brilliant autoglym product!
I like this product and use it annually on my MGTF hood, which for those of you familiar with the model and BMW’s penny pinching towards the end of their tenure of ownership, will confirm that the hood fabric determined in the design is single rather than the double skin thickness that BMW used on the Z3 in production at the same time. There is therefore more likelihood of water permeating the fabric, particularly in heavy rain and therefore it is important to use a sound waterproofing, particularly as the fabric on my hood must be getting a bit thinner as it is over 10 years old particularly having been opened and closed hundred’s of times and exposed to the elements, particularly sun light quite a lot.
Application is easy.
1. Using the upholstery tool on a vacuum cleaner attached to a hose, vacuum the hood
2. For any dirt or bird droppings, use a soft brush to break down the deposit and vacuum again
3. Apply the cleaner and then rinse off using a fine spray from a hose (not a pressure washer)
4. Allow to dry
5. Mask off the body/window areas of your car (I use masking tape and newspaper to catch over sprays)
6. Apply the protectant and allow to dry fully and remove the newspaper and tape)
I find that doing this on a hot day is easy and the whole process is over in a couple of hours. The majority of the time is taken masking up the car, but it really is worth it, particularly as it is a devil to get the protector off windows.
So why five stars?
+ Well my car has the hard top fitted for 5-6 months of the year and so an annual spray is more than sufficient, however, for a ten year old hood to have coped with many a downpour and not to let a drop of water through is a testament to the protection rather than the cheap single skin fabric used; it not only protects my hood, it seems to rejuvenate it every spring, the colour comes back and it certainly has helped to extend the life of the hood to the point that I can see it lasting for at least another 5 if not 10 years of almost daily use in the spring, summer, autumn.
+ It is competitively priced as I find that I get at least two applications from a pack, with the cleaner lasting for two and the protector lasting for three applications.
+ When you see the water beading on the hood after a good wash you can be confident that it works
I have just purchased a new (to me) Mercedes CLK convertible. It was 5.5 years old, and judging from its service history had not been cared for. It was (at the age of 54) the first soft top I had owned. Prior to purchase, I had done a LOT of research and therefore one of the first things I wanted to do was to give it the tlc it had been missing. One of the first things I did was the roof. There were a number of products out there, but having always used Autoglym products, and having read the reviews, this was the one I chose. It did not disappoint. As a product it does what it (and the reviews) say – it cleans and seals the roof. Water just literally beads on the surface. The instructions do say that you need to be careful of getting the product on the paintwork, so I masked off the paintwork using clear plastic sheeting – people passing by must of wondering what was going on – but it did the job. Some did get through, but a wipe over with Autoglym Super Resin and all was OK.Very happy with the product. Would recommend it, and would buy it again.
This stuff is great. It’s made of two solutions and a sponge and really works. My car roof… well I’m not sure it’s ever had any waterproofing since new, and its 13 years old now, the roof would become completely saturated in wet weather and the rain would seep through. This product has done exactly what it claims, rendering the soft top waterproof once more. The rain hits it, forms little beads and rolls off. This product claims to keep your roof waterproof for six months per application, and it reckons you should get two applications out of this set.
That’s a lot cheaper than a 140 quote I’ve seen on-line to have it carried out by someone else.
However, do please protect your car first before applying the fabric hood protection (bottle No.2), because the protection solution can stick to windows and car paintwork. I picked a large plastic drop sheet from Poundland that you’d typically put down when painting walls, and fixed it in place by lifting up the car hood and then locking the hood back down back down again. Then a little bit of tape to secure all the covering across the car, rendering the paintwork covered & protected for 1.
I then washed the hell out of the canvas soft top with bottle No.1, rinsed it off, left it to dry just a little. Whilst it was still pretty much sopping wet I sprayed on the protectant, using half the bottle. And that’s it! Make sure you coat evenly and see what happens. Looking at the finished job whilst still wet I was very sceptical, but impressed when I saw the results at the first spot of rain. Just brilliant!
I’ll definitely keep buying this stuff every year.
I found this product excellent. I actually ordered the protector on its own, but got the cleaner too, an unexpected and welcome bonus. The cleaner came with a sponge, which worked really well in getting off algae. My roof had become very green in places, having been left outside for the winter, and the cleaner brought it back up to a beautiful, new-looking black colour. It did take a bit of rinsing to get all of the cleaner product off the hood, but it got a thorough wash in the process so it was worth it.
It was a bit of a pain having to make sure the paintwork was protected from both products; I ended up putting newspaper over the windows and bodywork which worked well for the initial spray, and then had to take it all off to rinse the cleaner off, and then put it back on again to apply the protector. Some guidance recommends masking tape but I found damp newspaper stuck well, and this has the benefit of not risking taking off the paintwork. I probably did get some cleaner on the paint, because the hard to reach places in the folds of the hood were right next to the bodywork and it was unavoidable in order to clean it properly. But this washes off and I haven’t had any adverse effects from this. It is probably more important to ensure the protector doesn’t get on the paint, as you don’t rinse this off. I was worried about trying to get an even coverage of the protector over the whole hood, because it is transparent so not very easy to see what you’ve done. But spraying from a distance of about 30cm in an arc seemed to do the trick. My car is beautifully sealed against the elements now, and you can see the drops of water beading and running off the hood when it has rained.
I would thoroughly recommend this product.
Very effective
I used this to clean the soft top of my car and also see if it would make it water repellent.
Cleaning: It had just a few visible greenish spots (algae) when it was wet but otherwise I consider myself taking very good care and keeping the car always clean. I could not believe my eyes when I started scrubbing it! It did an amazing job and a deep cleaning of the top. In the end the color was even more vivid.
Protection: make sure the top is wet before applying and you have with you a bucket with clean water to clean any product that may go/drop to windows, rubbers, paint etc, or cover them. I was just cleaning them right away. Leave it to dry completely in the shade (no sunlight) and don’t get tempted to test it before it is completely dry!
Result: more vivid color after the cleaning, the top is not getting wet and just repels the water.
Not sure how it will be after several washing cycles, but definitely a product I will regularly be using!
Worth every penny!!
The only negative thing I can say about this is it does take some time to do it correctly, but it is so worth the time. I wish I had taken before pics, my black soft top was looking grey. It didn’t look dirty or moldy, but it looked old. My little car is 14yrs old. The top had every reason to look old. But replacing a soft isn’t cheap &on a car that’s no longer made makes it even more expensive. Autoglym didn’t bring it back to ‘new’.., I didn’t expect it to. But Autogylm made it look good again. I plan to drive this car for another 14yrs and Autoglym is the only product that I will use from now on. Don’t wast your $$ on the other ‘names’. This is the one that works!!!
Easy to follow instructions, clearly set out. On my Ds3 fabric roof, I started with the cleaning procedure, very easy to use in conjunction with the special sponge which was supplied in the kit. I rinsed the car first to moisten the roof, which also helped keep the spray off the paintwork, then applied the spray as instructed and gently agitated in circular patterns until the whole roof was covered, I left the soap solution to soak in, 20 mins or so, then scrubbed again and rinsed thoroughly with a low pressure hose until clear. I removed excess water from roof, then applied in sweeping motions applied the roof protector and sealer, being careful to keep away from paintwork, I immediately removed from bodywork with a wet cloth. No further work was needed with the protector, just to apply it evenly and allow to fully dry before using, I then washed the body of the car to remove any over spray. The kit is fantastic, the cleaning solution removed all green algae and was very evident on the white sponge which rinsed out easily. The roof didnt require vigorous rubbing or scouring, and was easy, it cleaned up great, my roof is so much brighter! The protecting and sealing spray was incredibly easy and fast. The next day it tipped it down with rain of biblical proportions (as it usually does when I clean my car) and the rain stayed beaded on my roof until It dried, it’s fantastic. Would certainly recommend considering the price point.
