Am I required to use my smartphone?
You can safely keep your phone tucked away as long as it’s within reach of Tom. This is because Tom requires an enabled Bluetooth connection with the TomTom app. Pairing Tom with the TomTom app requires Android 12 or higher, or iOS 18 or higher
Do I need a subscription to use Tom and the TomTom app?
No, you don’t need a subscription. TomTom app can be installed from the appstore without any cost, other than your smartphone’s data usage.
Which data sources does TomTom use?
TomTom has 600 million connected devices across the globe. Having such a widespread driving community allows us to bring you extremely accurate hazard warnings and traffic information. And not only in your home country, but also abroad.
What about local legislation with regards to speed camera alerts?
France: Speed cameras are unavailable; only Danger Zones can be accessed.
Germany: Using devices that alert for speed cameras is prohibited. Disable speed camera alerts before and during driving in Germany.
How do I set up the device in my car?
Tom comes with a magnetic mount with adhesive strip. The adhesive strip should be attached to your car’s dashboard. The metal plates in the alert device will then stick to the magnet.
Very easy to operate, keeps you safe and offers peace of mind from cameras.
I have a clean driving licence with no points, and always try to stay within the limit, but speed cameras seem to be appearing everywhere these days and some are downright sneaky. After every long journey, I typically find myself wondering for a week or two whether a surprise envelope is going to arrive through the letterbox, so I ordered this Tom more for peace of mind than anything else.
The setup with my iPhone 17 Pro Max was fairly easy, and once paired with the TomTom app I was able to go through the settings and also install a firmware upgrade.
It connects reliably, so after that, it simply starts automatically whenever I get in the car. I don’t have to remember to launch an app or fiddle with my phone before setting off. It should be said that this requires the location settings to always be on, otherwise performance will be uncertain.
The TomTom app also opens the door to their navigation maps if you want them. So far I still use Apple Maps for navigation, while Tom quietly sits in the background providing visual and spoken warnings for speed cameras, traffic problems, and other reported hazards. It feels more like an integral part of the car than another app demanding attention.
The coloured light alert catches your attention immediately, and the spoken warnings give you enough notice to react naturally rather than braking at the last second. It also warns if your speed creeps above the limit, which is useful on unfamiliar roads where signs are not always clear, especially around country villages. It briefly warned me I was over the limit while decelerating into a 20mph area.
In normal use the green light flashes briefly and I did have a concern that the mint be a distraction, so I placed it on the far right side of the dashboard, so it is only in my peripheral vision. As it turned out, I needn’t have worried because it is very unobtrusive in normal driving conditions. There is also an option to place it on the ventilator grill, but I chose not to use that.
Very importantly, there’s no subscription. Once you’ve bought the unit and installed the free app, that’s it. The information comes from TomTom’s long-established mapping and traffic network, so you are accessing a much more mature system than relying on random community apps.
Overall, I see this as more than just a gadget for avoiding speeding tickets, though I’d happily take that If it helps me stay aware of changing limits, unexpected traffic, and hazards, it makes every journey a little less stressful. Money well spent in my opinion.
Works well most of the time, just a few annoying niggles
I always try to stay within the speed limit whilst driving, but do accidentally stray over at times. It seems like the Government would rather us watch our speedometer rather than actually watch where we’re going! I therefore opted to get this TomTom speed camera warning device in the hopes it will keep my speed in check.
It was pretty easy to setup, it comes with an instruction book that guides you through it, but aside from scanning the QR code to find the correct app I didn’t really need it. My phone (Pixel 10 Pro) found it on the first try, it didn’t fail to connect or anything like that, it just worked from the start.
It comes with a sticky mount that connects to the device via a magnet, it also comes with an air vent mount which I have opted to use for simplicity and to avoid sticky residue. It’s easy to swap over and thanks to how light the device is, it isn’t in any way taxing on my cars air vent.
Once setup, the device will automatically connect to your phone when in range providing the device is powered on (you can turn it on and off by holding the power button). You don’t have to remember to launch any apps etc. The only thing worth mentioning is the TomTom app you install is constantly accessing your location so it can locate the device when in range. This may use extra battery power on your device.
The TomTom app you have to install is also a map if you want to use it, however it appears that you don’t have to use it for the device to know where you are as it still appears to work. The device has a few colours that flash to warn you of different things a companies by beeps. Blue flashes indicate a speed camera is ahead, yellow indicated a potential hazard, red indicates a traffic jam and blue and red alternating means you’re speeding (if enabled in settings)
I do personally find it can be quite annoying at times. I found it flashing red and beeping to warn me of traffic when there wasn’t really any there. Imwas stuck in a bit of traffic yesterday, and it was beeping at me every 60 seconds or so. I can’t be certain, but it appears to flash red and beep if you’re driving to warn you of traffic, then if you become stationary for a bit, the device thinks you’ve forgotten and does it again as you start moving.
I’ve also noticed it giving false notifications for speed cameras. Like warning you when approaching a rear facing GATSO on the other side of the road (they can’t catch you if you’re going towards it) and I’ve even had it flash at me warning me of a speed camera when I was on a bridge above another road. The camera was on the other road below the bridge, I was going over the top of it and it started flashing and beeping! I feel like these could be tweaked with updates.
I can’t comment on how well it works with mobile cameras yet as I haven’t seen any. It also has a feature where you can get it to warn you about likely speed cameras, probably using historical data to determine hot spots. This is an experimental feature and says it may be inaccurate. I can confirm it doesn’t work at the moment as it hasn’t once warned me of the camera van hotspot down the road!
It has a few flaws that I hope they address, but overall I’m happy with it especially if it saves me a few quid in the long run!
