M61 roadworks set to disrupt drivers for 11 weeks near Over Hulton

National Highways has announced that a major improvement programme will affect the M61 with concerns that usual motorway traffic will use the A6 and come off the Chequerbent Roundabout[1]. The works will begin on Monday, 6 July, and are scheduled to continue until Wednesday, 30 September. The M61[2] northbound between Junctions 4 and 5 will also be impacted.

The improvements include resurfacing, replacing road markings, upgrading traffic sensors and traffic signs, repairing bridge joints, and clearing vegetation. To ensure safety, night-time lane closures, slip road closures, and full overnight closures will be enforced from 9pm to 6am, Monday to Friday. There may also be some closures on Saturday and Sunday nights if needed.

During full closures, signed diversion routes will be available via the A6. Heavy goods vehicles travelling to and from the motorway network will likely face significant disruption, and residents have expressed concerns about increased lorry traffic in surrounding areas. National Highways has stated that the upgrades are crucial for maintaining the route and enhancing safety for road users.

Motorists are encouraged to allow extra time for their journeys and to check for updates before travelling.

There may be occasional full northbound carriageway closures between junctions 4 and 5.

Diversion (during full carriageway closures) will be following the signed diversion via the A6 Salford Road/Manchester Road
