* Tests have shown that with spot cleaning of 30 secs at max. steam level and direct contact to the cleaning surface with the Kärcher steam cleaner 99.999% of enveloped viruses such as influenza (excluding the Hepatitis-B virus) can be removed on common smooth household hard surfaces (test-germ: Modified-Vaccinia-Ankara-Virus).
** When thoroughly cleaning with the Kärcher steam cleaner 99,99% of all common household bacteria will be killed on common smooth household hard surfaces, provided the cleaning speed of 30 cm/s at max. steam level and direct contact to the cleaning surface (test-germ: Enterococcus hirae).
The SC4 is relatively small and light and easy to lift and/or tug around. The unit has a water supply tank that you fill up. This automatically feeds a pressurised steamer which produces a continuous supply of steam without you having to wait every now and then for the steam generator to catch up with demand. The steam is delivered at a high or low setting (easily switched) and for most jobs including cleaning floor tiles (and I have a lot of area to clean) the low setting more than copes. The attachments are nicely designed and well made and cleaning tiled floors, killing bed bugs in your matress, smartening up curtains/upholstery and even clothing it does with a breeze. All said this is a really good steam cleaner that does the job WELL.
So then, the niggles and there are some but given that the steamer is so good they are NOT a deal breaker but something which Karcher really should address – excellence of German enginering and all that hmmmmm?
1. The electric cord really could do with being a bit longer and also what a bonus IF it was retractable into the body of the steamer when not in use.
2. For the premium price I rather expected more from Karcher in as much as including a carpet glider in the stock unit rather than having to fork out another c. seventeen squids for a bit of plastic. I would also like to have seen as standard at least TWO micro fibre pads for the floor cleaner – for the minimul cost all I can say is that our European cousins are coming up short here.
3. The suggested method and facility for storing the hose, pipework and other accessories is not much short of pathetic and someone in Karcher really needs to go back to design school. Frankly it is a mess but, hey ho, the steamer unit more than makes up for this …………. but WHY should it have to really when for a little more thought in the design department and a few measely spondulics this product could be changed from being good to something outstanding !
So there you go. I have used the SC4 twice now testing out its capabilities and IT IS GOOD but with the niggling limitations. As to price and value for money, my acid test for the SC4 is “I paid 240 squids for it, would I repeat the exercise? YES, despite how it could so easily be improved, none of the niggles detracts from the fact (as I see it) is that this is a VERY CAPABLE DOMESTIC steam cleaner and will do all a demanding home user could ask of it.
If I find anything I can add to the abobe (good or not so good) I will add to this report, in the meantime I hope that my practical experience, albeit limited to date, is of help to some out in the ether. If the SC4 was, in my opinion not a good product I would not have used my time writing this !
p.s. Did I mention, cleaning tiled floors the SC4 is really fast to use. Previously I used one of those triangular things from a well known manufacturer whose name begins with the the letter five from the end of the alphabet 9go work it out). OK the Karcher is more than double the price but it WORKS SO MUCH BETTER.

great machine, many opportunities to replace chemical cleaners and still have better results. with assecoiers we clean the barbecue, the windows, polstery and rugs. the dog smell vanishes, the bacteria is dead. sinks and toilets done too.
only area improvement is recommended….the storge of extra brushes and accessories, storage rack etc, the pipe seems to be critically and should be made a bid stronge
I bought this to replace a SIMBR steam cleaner, which unfortunately at the third time of using started to trip the electrics in the house when it warmed up. Moral: don’t buy a cheap machine – there was no formal guarantee either but I did get a refund through Amazon.
On the other hand Karcher is a well known brand. My Karcher pressure washer lasted 18 years before it packed up, so I have great hopes for this steamer which I have now had for a month!
Pros:
1. Produces a good head of steam quite quickly
2. The attachments (poles and heads) are sturdy and click together nicely.
3. Major benefit – you can add more water to the tank as you are cleaning, so no need to stop the machine, refill and then wait until it warms up again. This is a major point in its favour I think.
4. Has a full guarantee which can be extended for more money, and the guarantee can be lodged on the Karcher website which is easy and satisfying to do
5. Good instruction booklet
Cons:
1. Expensive really for what it is – but at least it works
2. There is nowhere for the mains cable to be kept tidy – a relatively minor inconvenience
Therefore, recommended (so far, so good anyway). I’ll report back in 18 years if I (and Amazon) are still around!
My previous Karcher steamer gave up the ghost after 10 years. I originally ordered the SC3 from another supplier but it stopped working after 45 minutes! I was determined to put this one through it’s paces and decided to blitz one of the bathrooms. I used all the attachments and I have to say (so far) that it’s brilliant. The steam jet is really powerful and apart from getting blinded in all the steam – it is working perfectly. I find the best results on tiles and radiators is to really steam it and then use a good microfiber cloth. I’ve used it on tiles, grouting, soap scum, shower screen and windows and am really pleased. My previous experience left rather a bitter taste so I hope this one really lasts a long time. I did read some reviews about it running out of steam quickly and that is the case. However the removable water tank is a doddle to refill (and you’re not trying to negotiate the steamer into the sink or having to use a jug to fill it). Once filled the water tank is ready to go almost immediately. So far so good, lets hope it lasts!
This is an upgrade from an earlier version of the steamer that I ended up discarding after accidentally opening the lid before the pressure had released, causing an explosion of boiling water. When I saw this newer model with a removable water tank, I decided to replace it as it makes my cleaning much easier and greener. In my opinion, its cleaning power and versatility are unmatched. I prefer to use natural cleaning products for health reasons and they can be quite expensive so although you have the initial outlay for the machine you no longer have to buy a multitude of cleaning products.
I love the removable water tank—it makes refilling safer, quicker, and easier. Plus, it heats up in just 3 to 4 minutes. On the steam wand there are 3 settings Off/lock, level 1 steam and level 2 steam which cleans dirty tile grout effortlessly. There is onboard space for 2 attachments and for the cord to be wound and stored neatly. Assembly is also really straight forward as you just need to push the wheels on. There is a relatively long cord and the machine is lightweight to pull along whilst in use.
I purchased several attachment’s to make full use of the machine (I’ll review these separately)
Tips: Let the first jet of steam go into a bucket or a cloth that way if you are steaming soft furnishings or carpets you won’t get an overly wet patch
Once you have finishing steaming and have emptied the water tank empty the steam wand by again releasing into a bucket or cloth .
Top quality and versatile , but at a price
Not cheap but an outstanding piece of kit in use every day for wood, tile and laminate floors, shower glass, clothes and curtains.
I bought the additional steam head for clothes and curtains and a squeegee for glass.
My large Karcher pressure washer has been is use for decades so I like this brand.
