This is an excellent dash cam… well actually front and rear, that is easy to install and setup and makes very clear videos. The app seems to work well and I did not have difficultly getting connected and set up.
Good dashcam, awkward app
This is a relatively compact and easy to use dash cam, with a prominent lock button on the side to keep clips. Video quality is – like most dash cams – not really what you think of when you hear 4K but it’s detailed enough to be able to read street signs and license plates in good lighting. Even night performance is better than I expected.
The simplicity of the camera itself is both good and bad because it means you rely on the GKU app itself for changing most settings and for the easiest extraction of videos. Nothing is encrypted, at least, so you can just remove the SD card and copy it directly to another device if you want. And for some cases that might be quicker.
The app works well – when it works. You connect via the camera’s own wifi network, which is quick enough – also when it works. Unfortunately, sometimes the app simply refuses to connect even if you can connect to the camera wifi. Sometimes this will fix itself with an app restart or two, sometimes it might go away after you power cycle the camera, and sometimes you just give up and remove and re-add the camera to the app.
Does not affect the video or the recording, at least, which looks good, and contains a wide variety of GPS data for tracking location and speed mid-video. It’s also quite light and the included suction mount is stronger than I expected it to be and would have no issues mounting it that way rather than using a sticky pad.
The hardware is solid, the included memory card works well (and comes preinstalled in the camera, which had me hunting around the box for the first few minutes), and on the bright side there is only room for improvement on the software end.
