As seemingly the only reviewer so far to have investigated their Vine order in detail, or even read the manual, I’d like to point out that it explicitly tells you that the solar panel is only good for top-up and that the camera *will* need a primary wired form of charging too, albeit not continuously of course. So if you’re thinking of parking this in front of a bird feeder and forgetting about it, that’s not going to pan out. To which one may ask: why not have made the solar panel plug-in so it could be replaced with something more powerful if desired. Perhaps the power requirement is simply too unreasonable.
The MicroSD card is a generic thing with no class markings at all, even, so I can all but guarantee it has no durability to meaningful video loop recording. Find yourself a proper brand-named MicroSD card with a class rating suitable for that task if you want to be sure of retaining footage.
Those are the only two minor caveats that come to mind.
As to the rest, this is priced and functionally a luxury device, in my opinion, and the product lives up to their end of the bargain. The huge screen is borderline ostentatious, there’s room for manoeuvre in mounting it away from you in a large cab, which may be a necessity anyway due to the size. The screen is clear and responsive, although it has little to do other than pair itself with the camera and show the picture, borderline plug and play.
The camera does it’s part in providing a clear picture, signal seems to be problem-free, and the magnets feel as strong as blazes, it still makes me nervous but I can find no negative experiences with this method. IP69K is no slouch of a water/dust ingress rating either, this this has significant survivability credibility.
It’s a shame, then, that the setup is relatively specific and locked down to the purpose. I would imagine that many people don’t heavily use a caravan year round, I’m unlikely to do so ever, and being able to repurpose it the rest of the time would have been really welcome, especially given it’s very easy to take on and off as far as these things go. I’m not saying that can’t be done, but I’d like to add that the camera is *heavy*, probably twice the weight you’d imagine, which may also be a bit of a roadblack for multi-purposing.
Still, that’s outside the product remit and if you’re able to spend 150 on a rear camera and screen then there’s not much to complain about, especially when the system is trivially extensible up to 4 cameras using this screen at around 75 per camera; a potential 360 setup is intriguing. But that’s probably a security thing as well, so bear in mind what I said about getting a better MicroSD card if so.
I got this for my dad to use on his older motorhome after he expressed a concern with reverse parking in his old age. This seems to have proven worthy of his praise. He likes how it can be easily removed and he loves the massive screen although he does say it is a bit too big really and takes up a fair bit of cabin space. It gives a decent field of view and the camera can be adjusted to suit quite easily. The solar panel keeps the camera charged but I believe you still have to charge it properly from time-to-time via a wall outlet.
Although he uses this a reversing camera he wants to also use it as a kind of dash cam (at the rear) and I think this does that too. He bought a larger memory card for loop recording and I persuaded him to get a high quality branded one as I don’t trust the cheaper makes. We still need to set this up (I haven’t seen the manual yet) but once it’s done I reckon he will be quite happy.
Overall, for about 150 I think this is okay value. It solves his requirement for a reversing camera, and the fact that we can also set this up to loop record for travel peace of mind is a bonus.
Practical Camera System
