Man held after ‘serious sexual assault’ under Glasgow motorway

Officers locked down part of Cheapside Street, under the M8 offslip onto the Clydeside Expressway, after being called to the scene in the early hours of Tuesday morning. An 18-year-old woman was allegedly seriously sexually assaulted at around 3am, with a police cordon remaining in place on Wednesday as investigations continued. Drivers using the offslip, which connects to the Clydeside Expressway, reported seeing officers guarding the taped-off area while specialist teams carried out enquiries.

Police have confirmed that a man was arrested in connection with the incident but has since been released pending further investigation.

A Police Scotland[1] spokesperson said: "A 36-year-old man has been arrested and released pending further enquiries following a report of the serious sexual assault of an 18-year-old woman in the area of Cheapside Street, Glasgow, around 3am on Tuesday, 16 June, 2026.

"Enquiries remain ongoing."
