This is a very well made device. It has heft to it, the magnet is super strong, and it’s fully self contained being charged via solar. You can top up the battery if needed via USB charging, which might be needed in the winter months.
The camera quality is solid, I wouldn’t say exceptional but it’s decent enough for a reversing camera.
The app is good too. Setup was really easy, and the app detects objects as well as providing the normal reversing camera overlay. It beeps when an object is in view.
The execution though is a little clunky. Basically on set up you have to connect to the camera’s own WiFi network. From then, each time you open the app, you are asked to connect to that network.
What this means in practice is that you’ll most likely want a dedicated cheap Android or old iPhone/iPad device set up in your cab for this camera. Using your main phone presents two key issues:
– Connecting to the WiFi network when you open the app is not super quick so you’d be sat like a melon before you can do any reversing
– If you are using wireless CarPlay/Android Auto that will be disconnected in order to facilitate the camera’s connection
Paired though with a cheap Android tablet that’s always on in your cab would make this a compelling option, though others do exist with direct-to-screen wireless, so look into your options carefully.
