M60/M61 reopens near Bolton after crash and emergency repairs

National Highways confirmed that the clockwise carriageway of the M60 at Junction 15, where it meets the M61, reopened after engineers completed repairs to the road surface following a large spillage caused by the crash. In an update issued this morning, National Highways said: "The M60 reopens in Greater Manchester clockwise within Junction 15 (Bolton/M61) following a large spillage. Resurfacing works are now complete.

No delays on approach." The motorway had remained closed throughout Yesterday (June 16) and overnight after the collision during the morning rush hour. Current traffic conditions this morning (Image: National Highways)

Greater Manchester Police said the incident appeared to involve five vehicles, although National Highways initially reported that a car and two heavy goods vehicles had been involved. The crash caused significant damage to the carriageway, prompting highways engineers to carry out emergency resurfacing works before the route could safely reopen to traffic. During the closure, motorists faced delays of more than 30 minutes as traffic was diverted around the affected section of motorway.

The incident led to widespread disruption across Greater Manchester's motorway network, with congestion affecting surrounding routes throughout much of the day.

Traffic conditions have now returned to normal following the completion of the repairs and reopening of the carriageway.
