Brings my ageing Astra into 2020s
Swapped the tired factory radio in my 2008 Astra for this Essgoo unit last month and I’m pretty chuffed. It’s not perfect but it’s dragged the dash into the 2020s.
Install took me 25 minutes with a trim tool and one cup of tea, plug in and the CAN bus grabbed my steering wheel buttons without a grumble. The 7 inch screen is bright enough to see even when the sun finally appears in Yorkshire. And the 4GB RAM plus 64GB storage lets Spotify, Waze and a cheeky chess app run together with no stutter. Wireless CarPlay connects before I’ve even coaxed the eight year old into his seat which feels like witchcraft (note to self, update that playlist). My wife rang on the school run, the built in mic kept her voice crisp though she still heard the dog snoring in the back.
So why not full marks? Cold mornings add an extra ten second boot up and the FM tuner is just middling. I can live with that.
It has brought our old car back to life.
This is a very good stereo for our older model car. It offers a lot of modern features at a reasonable price.
Installation was straightforward. It fits the my dashboard well, and once connected, everything powered up smoothly. The interface is fast and responsive and apps like Google Maps, Spotify, and YouTube run without lag or freezing.
The Wireless CarPlay connects quickly every time I start the car, and I can use navigation, calls, and music without touching my phone. The screen quality is clear and bright, and touch response is good. GPS navigation works reliably, especially with real-time traffic updates via WiFi. I also like the ability to use offline maps when needed.
The sound quality is noticeably improved compared to my factory unit. The built-in equaliser allows for good customisation, and the Bluetooth provides stable, clear hands free calling. Music playback feels richer and more controlled. The steering wheel controls still work perfectly, and reversing camera support makes parking much easier. The overall system feels integrated.
For the price, this is an excellent upgrade. It brings modern smartphone features into an older car and makes daily driving much more enjoyable. We are happy we made the decision to get it.
Update your car with this plug and play entertainment system
It was easy to connect to my Corsa D us in the supplied multi connector which plugged int the car’s existing wiring loom. I connected it with the ignition off and did not disconnect the battery so it really was plug and play.
