Swerving M40 HGV driver arrested on drug driving suspicion

On Monday, April 27, several motorists got in touch with Thames Valley Police after spotting an HGV not keeping withing the lane on the motorway. Reports describe the 18-tonne lorry as swerving across lanes and getting uncomfortably close to other vehicles. This raised concerns that a serious collision could occur.

Oxfordshire Roads Policing officers quickly located the lorry and safely escorted it off the motorway before anyone came to harm. Once stopped, officers had concerns the driver may have been under the influence of an intoxicating substance. Following roadside impairment tests, the driver was arrested on suspicion of driving a motor vehicle while over the legal limit for a controlled drug.

A spokesperson for TVP Roads Policing said the incident highlighted the importance of vigilance from both drivers and the public. They said: "Professional drivers carry a professional responsibility -- and that includes keeping it straight, safe, and sober." Police also praised members of the public for reporting the incident promptly, adding that their actions helped prevent what could have been a serious crash.

Motorists are being urged to remain alert and report any dangerous driving, as quick action can make a crucial difference to road safety.
