Motorway near Birmingham to close for nine nights with huge diversion route

A major Midland motorway is set to shut completely in one direction for nine nights out of 12 to allow for key works

A Midland motorway running past Birmingham is set to close in part for nine nights in the coming fortnight with a major diversion in place.

The M5 is set to close overnight in one direction for five nights this week and four nights next week, with the final closure on Friday, May 8.

The northbound carriageway will shut overnight between Junction 4, for Birmingham[1] south west, and Stourbridge[2] and Junction 3 for Birmingham west and central and Kidderminster.

The carriageway will be closed from 9pm to 6am the following morning from today, Monday, April 27.

It will have the same closure in place from Monday to Friday this week, April 27 to May 1.

The closure will return after the Bank Holiday weekend and be in operation from Tuesday, May 5, to Friday, May 8, ending at 6am on Saturday, May 9.

National Highways said: "We're completing resurfacing work on the M5 near Birmingham from tonight until Friday, May 8.

"For safety, we'll fully close the northbound carriageway between junctions 4 and 3 overnight on weekdays.

No closure Monday, May 4.

While the closure in place, Frankley Services will also be closed at those times.

The diversion will send northbound traffic across on the A491 to Hagley in Worcestershire[5] and then back over to Junction 3 of the motorway, driving past the base of the Black Country and Halesowen.

National Highways said: "Closures and diversion - M5 northbound between junction 4 and junction 3 closed:

"Monday 27 April to Friday 1 May; Tuesday 5 May to Friday 8 May.

Closed overnight (9pm - 6am) on each date.

"Please note: Frankley Moto service station will not be accessible during closures.

"Access for emergency service vehicles will be maintained in emergency situations.
