Having just got a new car I felt it was also time to replace my old Transcend dashcam that had done me well over the years but was showing signs of its age in both the quality of footage and frequent loss of date/time settings because of a failing backup battery. The Miofive Pro looked like an ideal replacement. I was interested to learm this uses a super-capacitor which has the advantages of lasting longer than internal batteries, the main cause of my current woes. The instruction manual was really detailed and easy enough to follow and the kit has just about everything needed including a 64gb memory card including a pry tool for getting cable behind the car trim. The only thing that is not included is the hard-wire kit that is needed for the parking monitor. This comes in at a rather pricey 30 or thereabouts. The 4K video footage of the main unit is fantastic even in the dark. Unfortunately, I’ve yet to work out an easy cable route to install the rear-facing unit so can’t comment on that one as yet. Of course there is also the (almost obligatory nowdays) app that adds functionailty to the dashcam and can also record GPS logs of your routes. Note though that this is not essential. There are also clever – but a little gimmicky in my opinion – AI-type functions such as speed camera recogition, rest alerts and even stop/go alerts. All in all this is a massive upgrade from my old dashcam and one that is fantastic value at the current 104 voucher price (at the time of review). Recommended.

This isn’t the first time I have used a Miofive dash cam, so I was already pretty familiar with what to expect and how to use it. That said, the instructions are pretty clear and easy to follow and they provide the tools necessary.
The quality of the video is the main concern when it comes to Dash Cams and I have to say I am pretty happy with how this one holds up. When you download the video to your phone or PC you can very easily see the license plates on cars and pause, zoom in, etc. Even the rear camera looks great and is very clear to see what is going on.
This comes with a 64GB card, which is plenty of storage for a device like this since it will just write over old files when it needs the space and realistically you only need to be able to actually save a few minutes of footage since any incident you have, you’ll download the footage off the device anyway. The card is a no-brand one, so there is always the issue of corruption, but given the short term nature of the files you’ll likely see if there is a corruption issue before a file you need actually becomes corrupt. And you can always replace it with a different card yourself, if you like.
This comes with a bunch of other features that I personally don’t use much, like AI and Speed Camera stuff; essentially it lets you know when speed cameras are coming up (if it is in its data base) and the screen shows the speed limit, your speed, etc. It can also give little prompts like ‘keep up with the car in front’ in case you’re in traffic and don’t realise the car has moved off in front of you. These are usually drowned out by my music, but it is nice these features are there for those that will use them.
You can edit the information displayed on the screen too, and the information displayed on the video files, such as time, date, speed, location, etc. And you can have either just the front or just the back displayed, or do a Picture in Picture style where both are displayed but one is bigger than the other (you can pick which is the bigger picture).
Overall, I can’t think of a single complaint about this, and gives some good peace of mind that if something happens when out driving I will at least have proof to use.
Well thought out, good solid performer and easier to install than I had imagined
This Pro version of the Miofive S1 Dashcam build upon the original Miofive S1 Dashcam, by providing a second rear facing dashcam and larger memory storage. However, having got used to the excellent clarity of the 4k video provided by the main front facing dashcam, that makes it easy to pick out details such as numberplates, the 2k video offered by the rear camera looks distinctly second rate. However, at least there is a rear facing camera providing video capture, it is just that at 2k it is just ok compared to the clarity provided by 4k video. That said there does need to be a rear window to make the addition of a rear camera of value, which may not be the case in some vans. If a rear camera is of value, you can opt to pay a bit more and get the Miofive S1 Ultra that provides 4k video front and back. This Pro dashcam is straightforward to install. It comes well packaged with all that you need to install it, including a well written step-by-step guide. My 2 biggest concerns before I started ware: securely mounting the cameras, particularly heavier front camera, so they stayed in place and neatly hiding the wiring. With the use of the cable prying tool made hiding the 2 cables: one to provide power to the main front camera and the other to connect the rear camera to the front camera, far easier than I had thought. As for the security of the front camera fixing, so far so good. The box included both electrostatic film and adhesive tape that work together to provide good adherence whilst enabling clean removal if necessary.
