M4 diversion in full after coach crash closes motorway
Diversion route in full after crash closes the M4 in Wiltshire:
- Diversions are in place following a serious crash that closed part of the Wiltshire stretch of the M4 in the early hours of this morning. The motorway is closed on the westbound carriageway[1] between junction 14 at Hungerford and junction 15 at Swindon due to a 'serious incident' involving a car and a coach.
- There is a large oil spillage across the road surface from the coach involved. National Highways shared an update shortly before 10am[2] advising that the motorway "remains closed following an earlier collision and is expected to stay shut for some time".
- Diverted traffic should follow the hollow square diversion symbol. The full instructions for directions around the closure are listed as follows:
- Leave the M4 at J14.
At the roundabout, take the first exit and join the A338. Follow for approximately three miles.
- At the A4 mini roundabout turn right onto the A4 towards Hungerford, avoiding Hungerford town centre.
- After a short distance to the next roundabout take the second exit into Charnham Park.
- Turn right onto the B4192 and follow for approximately 13 miles through Aldbourne to the A419 roundabout
- Take the first exit and join the A419. Continue to re-join the M4 westbound at Junction 15.
- Traffic-monitoring site Inrix reports: "M4 westbound closed, slow traffic due to accident investigation work from J14 A338 (Hungerford) to J15 A419 Marlborough Road (Swindon East).
Congestion to routes through Marlborough as traffic diverts around the ongoing closure.
The road remains closed since around 3am following a serious accident involving a car and a coach."
- National Highways previously advised of a "serious collision involving a car and a coach", which required attendance from all emergency services.
Its incident log confirmed: "There is a large oil spillage across the road surface from the coach involved, which contractors will be attending to assess."
