Leeds Microsoft data centre plans for power station site set to go ahead
Technology giant Microsoft[1] is poised to receive approval to construct a data centre on the site of a former power station. Employment[2] opportunities could be generated if the firm secures permission for the redevelopment of the Skelton Grange site in Stourton. Microsoft stated the facility would enhance the delivery of goods and services and assist with internet connectivity for schools and hospitals.
Leeds[3] City councillors have been advised to approve the proposals at a plans panel meeting on Thursday (April 23). A design report noted the site was situated near the M1 motorway and ten minutes from the city centre. It stated: "Its close proximity to Leeds city centre provides access to a skilled labour force and equally provides access to employment for people within local communities in the vicinity."
Generators and cooling equipment would require installation should the project proceed. Ward councillors and local residents were consulted during pre-application discussions with the council, the report confirmed. It noted: "Inputs and feedback from the consultation have influenced and shaped the final proposals for the scheme." Council planners have advised that the scheme is delegated to the city's chief planning[4] officer for approval, subject to conditions.
