Knowles Logistics Mercedes-Benz Actros fleet expanded with five new tractor units

The Knowles Logistics Mercedes-Benz Actros fleet has been expanded with the addition of five new 6x2 tractor units, strengthening the operator's long-distance trunking capability. The new Mercedes-Benz Actros 2548 LS units join a 385-strong fleet and have been supplied by Midlands Truck & Van, alongside a three-year Repair and Maintenance package from Daimler Truck UK.  The move reflects a steady approach to fleet renewal, focused on efficiency, uptime and driver conditions rather than headline-grabbing changes.

Efficiency gains built into the spec

The Knowles Logistics Mercedes-Benz Actros units are powered by the latest Euro VI engine, delivering 480hp through the Mercedes PowerShift 3 automated transmission.

Aerodynamic improvements alone are expected to deliver around 3% better fuel efficiency compared to the previous generation. It is not dramatic, but over long-distance trunking cycles, those gains add up quickly. Predictive Powertrain Control has also been specified to further optimise fuel consumption, particularly on motorway routes where the trucks will spend most of their working life.

Safety and driver support systems

Safety tech is doing most of the heavy lifting in modern truck specs, and the Knowles Logistics Mercedes-Benz Actros units are no exception.

Each vehicle includes Active Brake Assist 6, Lane Keeping Assist, and Active Sideguard Assist 2 with autonomous braking. Matrix LED headlamps and Attention Assist are also included. MirrorCam replaces conventional mirrors, improving aerodynamics while enhancing visibility and reducing blind spots.

It is now the industry baseline for long-haul work, but still a long way from universal across the UK fleet.

Driver comfort still matters

Despite all the talk of efficiency, driver comfort remains a deciding factor. The trucks are fitted with the ProCabin Big cab, featuring a flat floor and Styleline interior. Chrome-look trim and premium detailing give it a more modern finish, although drivers will care more about the practical elements.

These include a suspended seat, automatic climate control, and an auxiliary heater for year-round comfort. Living space upgrades include a lower bunk with an ExtraPremiumComfort mattress, LED ambient lighting, and integrated storage features. It is the sort of setup expected for long-distance work, where drivers are effectively living in the cab for extended periods.

Supplier confidence and support

Alex Knowles, Managing Director at Knowles Logistics, said the decision followed strong performance during trials and confidence in aftersales support.

"This is our first time working with Midlands Truck and Van for a number of years, but the new Actros, which performed impressively in trials, along with a visit to the new Mercedes-Benz parts logistics hub in Milton Keynes, reinforced our decision." He added: "We are confident these vehicles will deliver the high levels of fuel efficiency, performance and reliability required of a Knowles fleet vehicle." Daimler Truck UK also pointed to the long-term benefits of the investment. Nicola Dainter-Kemsley, Key Account Manager, said the trucks will "deliver measurable gains in fuel efficiency, safety and uptime," while supporting whole-life cost control.

Midlands Truck & Van highlighted the importance of aligning the specification with operational needs, backed by a structured maintenance package.
