Everything we know about M62 closure as exploding fire shuts down motorway
The M62 Westbound and Eastbound have been closed at junction 30. Here is everything we know about the incident.
- The M62[1] Eastbound carriageway was closed between junctions 29 and 30 earlier this afternoon[2] (Monday, April 20). The Westbound carriageway was closed shortly after, with traffic snaking back up to four miles in either direction.
- West Yorkshire Police[3] said officers were called to a collision between four vehicles at 4.07pm.
Everyone was removed from the vehicles and no life-threatening injuries have been reported.
- The West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service[4] said a number of vehicles were on fire and cylinders have been identified at the scene. They confirmed one of the cylinders had exploded.
- Drivers have been at a standstill[5] for over an hour, and those travelling have been advised to avoid the area where possible.
- National Highways confirmed a diversion has been put in place. The diversion follows the M1, A639 and A642, diverting cars between junctions 29 and 30 on the M62.
- This is an ongoing situation, with National Highways reporting the situation is not expected to clear until 9.30pm this evening.
