Simple to use and works well, but relatively expensive and only a maximum 5 hour delay
This is a well-made convenient domestic 13A home EV charger; it plugs straight into your domestic 3-pin socket – make sure it’s a water-proof socket if outside! The cable is 8m long which should accomodate most situations. It is very simple to use; 1. plug it into the domestic mains, 2. select the delay (to coincide with your cheap electricity tarif), 3. set the current (13A in the UK in most cases) 4. Plug the type 2 plug into your EV charging socket. Hoever, BEWARE: the instructions refer to ‘pressing’ the appropriate buttons to select the delay and current. If you do this you will get very frustrated and will think that you will have to return it as defective; just touch the buttons and all will be well! Once you’ve charged your EV this charger comes with a handy flex storage hook which allows you to store the flex neatly if you are keeping the charger at home rather than in your vehicle. If so, it is worth purchasing an additional cable storage hook to put upside down say 70cm below the first one so that you can wind the flex around the two like you do a vacuum cleaner flex; it’s far neater. However, I see the main use of this charger as being kept in your vehicle to allow you to charge up at friends who don’t have a dedicated EV charger (and paying them for the electricity!). It only charges at 3/7 the rate of a dedicated single phase EV charger so is rather slow and anyone who is able to install such a dedicated EV charger would be better off doing so. Value-wise it is relatively expensive; you shouldn’t need to spend more than 100 on this type of portable 13A 3W EV charger. However, it is simple to use and it works well. My only other criticism is that the delay can only be specified in 30 minute increments up to a maximum of 5 hours. Other cheaper devices go up to at least 8 hours, which is more useful if you want to want to set up your charging to make use of a 23.30hrs start to a cheaper charging tarif when you get home from work.
a nice EV charge
I recently bought the NRG CHARGE Charging Cable 8m, 3kW — 3 Pin Plug portable car charger, and I’ve been really impressed with how practical and reliable it is.
One of the standout features for me is the 8-metre cable. It gives so much flexibility when parking, especially if the socket isn’t right next to the car. I don’t have to awkwardly reverse in or stretch the cable to its limits — there’s plenty of reach, which makes charging at home far more convenient.
The 3kW charging speed is another big plus. It’s noticeably faster than most standard 10A chargers I’ve used before, which makes a real difference when you want to top up quickly overnight or between trips. It feels like a proper upgrade in terms of performance without needing a dedicated wall box installed.
It’s also straightforward to use — just plug into a standard 3-pin socket and you’re good to go. The build quality feels solid and durable, and it’s compact enough to store easily in the boot when not in use.
Overall, this charger strikes a great balance between speed, convenience, and portability. The long 8m cable and 3kW output really set it apart from basic chargers, and I’d definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a dependable home charging solution.
practical portable EV charger for home and travel use
I wanted a reliable backup charging option that could plug into a standard UK socket, and this 3kW portable charger fits that purpose well. It connects through a regular 3 pin plug and allows adjustable current settings between 6A and 13A, which is useful depending on the socket and household wiring. The ability to select the charging level gives more control and helps avoid overloading older circuits. With up to 3kW output at 13A, it is suitable for overnight charging or adding useful range during the day. The build feels solid, with a heavy duty cable and a casing designed for regular use. IP65 protection means it can handle outdoor charging in typical British weather without concern. Integrated safety features such as protection against overheating, overcurrent and short circuit provide reassurance during longer charging sessions. The 8 metre length offers good flexibility when the parking position is not directly next to the socket. It is compatible with most Type 2 electric vehicles, making it a versatile option for different models. For anyone looking for a dependable portable charger for home use, travel or emergency backup, this unit provides straightforward and controlled charging from a standard socket.
flexible current settings
This cable is a dependable solution for home charging when a dedicated wall box is not available. The 8-metre length provides enough reach to park comfortably without needing to be right next to the socket. I appreciate the ability to adjust the current, which ensures the domestic circuit is not overloaded during long overnight sessions. The build quality of the cable and the plug feels robust, and the weatherproofing has handled rain without any issues. The display on the control box is clear and provides a real-time view of the charging status. It stores away neatly in the boot and serves as a perfect primary or backup power source.
